Elements and the Doshas in Ayurveda

Vata – Air and Ether

The Ayurveda dosha related to air and space elements is called Vata Dosha. The qualities of this dosha are brevity, chilly, and dryness. It controls our bodily and mental actions, illuminating our circulation, waste removal, respiration, neurological system, articular motion, and cognitive functions.

Pitta – Fire and Water

The components of fire and water form the basis of the Pitta dosha. This dosha is fiery, subtle, astringent, fluid, greasy, and movable. Many people identify Pitta with the summer season and its accompanying warm, bright days. The digestive system, skin, complexion, core temperature, and metabolic rate are all impacted.

Kapha – Water and Earth

The Ayurveda elements of water and Earth make up the Kapha dosha. Kapha tends to be wet, cold, slow, solid, smooth, greasy, and steady. Kapha, on the other hand, represents psychological and physiological fluidity, steadiness, and order.

Loyalty, religion, a sense of responsibility, and ethics are all expressions of this element in our nature. You should take more of this element when your body tends towards attributes like being too light, chaotic, anxious, restless, fluid, or irritable.

Tridoshas and Dhatus

Pitta and Kapha are the Ayurvedic tri dosha or energetic elements of nature that serve as guiding principles for life. All three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—play an equally important role in our physiology. Each contributes to the body in its unique way.
But, the doshas can wreak on our health if they are not in harmony. Of the seven dhatus, the Earth is mostly composed of mamsa (muscle), meda (fat), and asthi (bone). Also, the stability of the form of each dhatu depends on a certain amount of earth elements.

Balancing the Earth Element

  • Grounding or earthing: Grounding can strengthen your bond to the solid ground beneath your feet. We go about our daily lives all too often without truly connecting with the ground beneath our feet. Try standing firmly on the ground or walking barefoot on the grass as an exercise. Sensitize your lower extremities and feet to the downward flow of all your negative feelings, restlessness, and anxiety. Feel more rooted in reality, as though mother earth has absorbed your worries.
  • Keep to the outdoors: Try devoting more time to grounding outdoor activities. Try standing on the sand, strolling through the grass, or ascending a mountain.
  • Meditate: If you discover your Vata is high and lacks earth elements, mindfulness can be incredibly grounding.
  • Have a diet high in earthy elements: Eating meals high in earth elements can help you absorb more of that element through food alone. You can eat more root vegetables, tubers, legumes, roots, tubers, yams, sweet potatoes, cereals, nuts, and seeds.
  • Take in plenty of fluids: Drink half your body weight in ounces of water per day, spaced out, if the earth element is high.
  • Grounding exercises: If you have a surplus of earth energy, try including some challenging and stimulating yoga twists. Padma sadhana is a helpful practice for this.
